Ever since the late 90’s, watching the New Year’s message from the President minutes before midnight has become a tradition everyone actually waits for. Usually, the President talks about the past year: what went wrong, what was good. It is basically a wrap-up of the year past, and wishes for a good year to come.
Interestingly, Vladimir Putin was the first President who took the New Year’s message “outdoors.” Previously, all of them were taped indoors, but Putin was the first one to escape the stuffy studio and deliver his message from inside Moscow’s heart – the Red Square.

Провожая старый год, мы вспоминаем его радостные и грустные моменты и надеемся, что следующий будет хорошим и удачным для каждого из нас и для всей страны. Мы будем вместе строить современную Россию – сильную, открытую, дружелюбную. У нас богатая и древняя история, и мы по праву ею гордимся. И в то же время Россия – молодая страна. Напомню, что в наступающем году ей исполнится только двадцать лет. Для государства это не возраст, но дети, родившиеся в новой России, уже стали взрослыми. Теперь и от них зависит, каким будет второе десятилетие этого века. И всё, что мы делаем, мы делаем для наших детей – для того, чтобы они были здоровы, чтобы у них в жизни всё получалось, чтобы они жили в безопасной, благополучной и счастливой стране – стране, где уважают старших, сохраняют традиции нашего многонационального народа, где стремятся к достижению новых целей.
